Course Description:

This course develops writing skills from the paragraph level to the level of the essay. It concentrates on the essential form and function of the writing unit (paragraph or essay) in order to prepare the ground for the academic essay. Specific types of composition are practiced: chronological, cause-effect, and comparison/contrast. In addition, work on paraphrase and summarizing is undertaken, along with back-up work in some specific structure areas.

Course outcome:-

Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

1. apply English grammar rules and construct correct sentences at the paragraph and essay levels.
2. correctly punctuate and capitalize citations and supporting details in an essay.
3. write focused, undeviating, cohesive and coherent essays effectively.
4. cite, paraphrase and summarize correctly for the pupose of providing supporting details in writing.
5. expand paragraphs into essays, including an effective introduction, body and conclusion.
6. appropriately produce different essay types (process, cause & effect, and comparison/contrast).
